No, and I say that as the Managing Director of a company that has held MCS certification since the scheme launched and has been installing renewable energy systems across Hampshire since 1988. The certificate tells you that a company met the minimum standard to be registered. It tells you nothing about the quality of their heat loss calculations, the correctness of their radiator specifications, or whether they will answer the phone when something goes wrong in year three.
Getting called out to fix other MCS-certified companies’ installations is a regular part of this work. Not comfortable saying publicly. But true, and homeowners deserve to know it.

What does MCS certification actually mean?
MCS, the Microgeneration Certification Scheme, is the UK’s official quality standard for small-scale renewable and low-carbon energy installations. To become MCS-certified, an installer must demonstrate competence, carry appropriate insurance, follow MCS installation standards, and maintain ongoing compliance.
Certification is a genuine filter. It removes the least qualified operators from the market. Any installer who cannot meet MCS standards should not be touching a solar or heat pump installation in Hampshire.
But certification is a floor, not a ceiling. It establishes that a company can legally install. It does not guarantee that they do it well.
What does MCS certification not tell you?
It does not tell you whether the installer carries out a proper heat loss calculation before specifying a heat pump. It does not tell you whether they upgrade radiators to suit the lower flow temperature, or whether they install the correct cylinder, or whether they commission the system correctly.
It does not tell you whether they will answer the phone when something goes wrong three years after installation. It does not tell you whether they have over thirty-five years of Hampshire installation experience or six months.

What should you look for beyond MCS certification?
Manufacturer approval. AES is a Mitsubishi approved partner. That is a separate accreditation that requires demonstrated competence working with specific equipment. Manufacturers do not award this without verification.
Years trading. AES has been installing across Hampshire since 1988. A company that has been trading for three years has not had enough installations reach maturity to know how their work performs over time.
References from completed jobs. Ask for specific references, not testimonials on a website. Speak to homeowners in Hampshire who had a heat pump or solar installation completed by the company two or more years ago. Ask whether the system performed as expected and how the company responded to any issues.
The survey process. Any competent heat pump installer will carry out a room-by-room heat loss calculation before quoting. If an installer quotes without one, walk away.
Transparency on cost. At AES, we charge the same price regardless of whether a BUS grant is available. The grant does not inflate our margins. Some companies use grant availability as an opportunity to increase pricing. Ask them directly.
